A Court of Spoilers: Sarah J Maas Discussion

Okay so we need to talk. I will say this once: If you HAVE NOT READ the ACOTAR series (and I mean read it cover-to-cover, including the latest book ACOWAR) then you will almost definitely not want to read any further. I will ruin it for you. I mean you can probably finish this sentence (and maybe even the whole paragraph) but you’re playing a very dangerous game you naughty thing – close. the. page.

Welcome fellow series readers and reckless spoiler loving crazies (I’m assuming you guys are the only ones left at this point) and welcome to my ACOWAR mega-rant. This is everything I need to talk about in light of finishing the last in the first three stories of Prythian.

Amren

It was kinda, sorta, beautiful – the way Amren freaked us all out (or at least me) and freed herself and my heart did a whole gymnastics routine when she fizzled out and disappeared. I’m so curious to find out why she chose to come back – like was it Varian or did she do it for the Court of Dreams? (So cute by the way.) Is she going to be the same Amren or will something have shifted?

The Prince of Merchants

I sobbed when Feyre, Nesta and Elain’s father appeared over the horizon with an fleet of ships named after his daughter, I don’t know about you guys. I think it was because Feyre was always saying “my father would never…” and although I agree with a lot of you that it doesn’t make up for everything he did previously I do think it was an important moment of closure not only for Feyre (who finally has her father come to the rescue) but for Nesta too.

File:Lucien by valamerys.pngI also think if we’d seen more of their father and perhaps got his story (the loss, the depression, the poverty, not being able to provide for his family) we might’ve felt a bit more sympathy for his final actualisation and sacrificial death. That being said it would’ve been hard to include him afterwards, he doesn’t really fit the rest of them and his behaviour would be difficult to condone. It’s like when you make a parent sim on ‘The Sims’ and them kill them off to give the kids some history. Classic sim move. It also would’ve been so nice to have Lucien at the hilt, claiming all the glory – his apex was a little underwhelming and we’ll need more of him in the next books.

Rhysand’s magical re-birth

GOD-DAMN, my emotions. I still don’t think I can talk about it. I was so traumatised that I actually felt a bit used when he came back. I do wonder if it would’ve been a more devastating and symbolic message to have just let him die for the court of dreams. It certainly would’ve been more Romantic. I’d miss him though so I take that back. Gosh, he’s great.

Lucien’s father?!

CAN WE JUST TAKE A MOMENT BECAUSE THIS HAS TO BE EXPLORED IN THE NEXT BOOK. Was anybody else really excited about this? Helion is just so badass. I need more Day court and I need to know what happened with Jesminda

Nesta and Elain

Yaaayyyy! They developed into such great characters! That character arc though for Elain! I’ve always weirdly liked Nesta but we really begin to understand her motives and drives in this book – I can’t wait to find out how they each move on – will they both stay at the Night court? and eek! Elain mating with Lucien??!! But I’ll talk about that more in a minute.

Tamlin isn’t the Devil

I’m not saying that selling out Feyre and her sisters to the king of Hybern wasn’t an almost unforgivable mistake. I’m still mad at him too. But he is suffering in the wake of his decisions – anyone he once held close is dead or against him and that must feel pretty bad. We have to remember his character in the first half of the first book, the playful, protective friend and rescuer on a mission to rescue his people. He was just as vulnerable as anyone else under Armantha’s cruel campaign under the mountain and i think (as much as we’ve explored Feyre and Rhysand as being broken by her) Tamlin was also a little broken.

His character arc is as sophisticated as every other character in this book and I am so pleased he has reached a point where he is able to take a step back and do the thing Rhys had to do for so long. He puts someone else before himself. Maybe Alis and the boys can help him with his anger problems (if they’re not still hanging with Tarquin in the Summer court).

So Lucien is Elain’s mate but it’s hard to see them together. But then she hasn’t really opened up as a character fully yet so maybe they’ll make sense in the next one, I really don’t know – Maas keeps switching my loyalties. He [Lucien] is gonna have a whole other ‘who-is-my-father’ (Darth Vader??? – you heard it here first) drama/dilema going on so he’s gonna be all distracted and stuff. PLUS, there’s Azriel to think about and when his heart eventually gets smushed by Mor he’s going to either an Edward (twilight) style mega sulk or a Stefan Salvatore (TVD) rampage-strop.

…………………………………………………….i’m dying………………………………………….. (props to @probablylikesixducks for helping me with backgrounds and dealing with my annoying snaps xoxo love ya gal): Or he’ll just understand, like he probably should, but he’ll still be sad. And then, after all that maybe we’ll get the Azriel-Elain ship but I kind of hope she comes into her own a bit before that – we don’t want another Tamlin situation where she’s all mollycoddled and over-protected. BUT ALSO I don’t want to see Azriel and Lucien tearing each other to pieces because I think that’d just about break me. On the other hand Maas would be really clever to create a conflict between two very much loved characters – we’d have a whole team Azriel/ team Lucien divide and if that’s not enough to hit you right in the feels I don’t know what is!

Cassian and Nesta need to address the tangible tension between them and obviously Mor’s ‘coming-out’ to the readers needs some continuation. Am I the only one that felt that was a little poorly done? And of course don’t we all need to see that little bone carver boy become a reality (because he’ll be both beyond cute and badass powerful no-doubt)? I don’t know that they should be the main thread of the next one but I’d certainly enjoy reading a little Rhys’ parenting skills. As much as it pains me to say it, their story has (more or less) been told and whilst I still want to know what goes on for them it’d be super interesting to get inside the head of some of the other characters – Amren in particular. She’s now missing a part of herself and it’d be incredible to follow her story and understand her, the mystery female, from her perspective and understand why she chose to stay.

What’s next Speculation??

We’ve already covered the potential baby between Rhys and Feyre, Lucien’s parentage debacle, Amren’s path to self discovery and Elain’s loverboy troubles but what actually do I think might happen in the next Prythian set story?

Well, I shall tell you. I don’t know if I think Ianthe is dead. Well, I have my doubts at least; Feyre didn’t see her die, only heard it. She [Ianthe] was wicked and clever and I don’t think the weaver killed her. Instead I think Ianthe offered her some sort of deal. We know Rhysand had a deal with the weaver (obviously) but I’m not sure if the weaver was wearing Ianthe’s jewel for a reason other than as a battle trophy or if maybe I’m over thinking it. Also if she’s not dead there’s the whole Calanmai thing to think about – when she took Lucien to bed with her. Maybe Feyre’s baby won’t be the one we’re interested in reading about when the next book comes along?

Also, does anyone ever look at that Prythian map and wonder what parts of it we aren’t being shown? It’d be cool to discover some new, differently structured courts and fae characters so I hope that plays a part in the coming novels and novellas.

Where is Byraxis??? I miss that miserable, terrifying, and also, I shed a tear for the Suriel and I’m not ashamed.

“I understood why the Suriel had come to help me, again and again. Not just for kindness … but because it was a dreamer. And it was the heart of a dreamer that had ceased beating inside that monstrous chest.”

If that didn’t break you then seriously, check your pulse.

The whole ending was just a heart-wrenching, pulling you back and forth chaos; I loved every second of it.

Phew! I think I’ve got a lot of it off my chest  now; I’ve no-doubt forgotten a few things but maybe they will come up in the comments. No angry rants please but let me know what you thought? Do you agree? Disagree? Talk to me in the comments below!
